Red jasper gem: Mithras slaying the bull
Red jasper gem; transverse oval, both faces flat, rounded edges. (Shape 9c).
Donation of Armand Delatte in March 1962. Acquired in Athens.
Side A: Undecorated.
Side B: Mithras half-kneeling in the centre, to right, his head also to right, nude, slaying a bull with a knife held in his raised left hand. On the right: a leaping dog. Below the bull: a snake. The scene is flanked by a naked female figure on each side, hands held up in adoration. The scene is located in a cave with the sun on the right, and a crescent moon on the left.
