Yellow jasper gem: Kronos with crescent and star (A) Greek text (B)
Yellow jasper gem; upright oval, both faces flat. (Shape 8–9).
Gift of Lenore Barozzi (Chicago), donated to the J. Paul Getty Museum in 1980.
Side A: Kronos, bearded, with head covered and crowned with the solar disk, stands left, wearing tunic and mantle. He holds a harpe in his left hand and a small crocodile in his right hand. To the left, an eight-pointed star, to the right, a crescent open to left.
Side B–C: Inscription in five lines, the last two letters written on the edge: ιαω|σαβαωθ|αδωναι|οιτρεισ|οιμεγαλοι → ’Ιάω ΣαβαώΘ ’Αδωναΐ οἱ τρεῖς οἱ μεγάλοι. 'Iao, Sabaoth, Adonai, the three great (ones)' (R. D. Kotansky).
