Kassel Gems added to Phoinix

We are delighted to announce that the entire collection of magical gems in the Kassel Antiquities Collection (Antikensammlung, Hessen Kassel Heirtage) is now openly accessible through the Phoinix Platform. Click HERE to browse the collection. Each gem is interlinked both to its record in the Kassel Museum’s online database, and to its entry in Berlin’s Antiquitatum Thesaurus.

The Kassel gems constitute a particularly significant addition to our platform because they form a closed collection. They were brought to Kassel in the early eighteenth century from the collection of Antonio Capello in Venice, and have remained together ever since. As such, they provide an excellent basis for stylistic analyses that seek to map the relationship between ancient gems and post-antique pieces produced with their aid more precisely than has previously been possible.
